Milestone Friday!!!

Riley came downstairs after sleeping in the bathroom (that seems to be her favorite place when she goes upstairs) and ran right out the back door!  That’s a first!  And when I called her to go into the car, she ran out without a leash and jumped in!

Her hard shell is slowly cracking and we can see her inner happy self coming through!  We’ve even been getting little tail wags!!!!

One step forward, 2 back.  That’s what it feels a bit like today.
I thought we were making progress, at least it felt that way.  But poor Riley hasn’t moved much today from under my desk.  She seems so cozy while I work, but I feel sad that she seems stuck there.
Last night she snuggled on the coach while we watched the Olympics.  Funny, but we all agree that she smells soooo good.
But today I think she sat on the coach only for about 5 sec.
I learned from St. Huberts that she was heavily sedated by her previous owners in the city.  Life on the 10th floor of a high rise was not a good fit for poor Riley and she wasn’t allowed to be a regular dog.  It’s going to take her a long while to get back to being a normal dog.
She deserves a good loving family.  And we’re in for the long haul.   She really is a sweetheart.  I just worry….how long can a dog hold it’s bladder?  Riley will go 12 hours.  I take her out, and she makes a beeline to the back door.  Won’t pee or poop!
I resorted to taking her for a car ride.  She loves the car.  Then we pull up to a park. She’ll run out and poop and immediately afterwards run to the car.  It reminds my of when I would drive my girls around when they were babies , trying to get them to take a nap.  The car can do wonders.  So I’m headed for a drive!

Last night Riley slept in our bed….of course!  I brought her upstairs and put a blanket on the floor next to my bed but once she saw Dixie, our golden, hop onto the bed, she joined the crew.  And she slept all night!  I’d say that’s a successful 1st day.

But I feel like we made progress yesterday in some areas and kind of regressed a bit today.  I know that we have to take baby steps and let Riley take the lead.

So here’s were we put pluses….. Went outside in the morning to piddle.  Yippey!  Plus!  Ate some lunch.  Now I think that deserves a big PLUS.    Found one of the other dogs toys and laid claim to it.  Plus.

Minuses….  Not happy about being outside.  Got soo nervous in the back yard. Wouldn’t walk to the front of the house as she did last night.

We’ll work on that one.  All and all I think we are making progress.  She has decided that sleeping under my desk is her cozy spot.  She did do that at St. Huberts too, so that makes sense.  Although yesterday she was on the couch A LOT, so I hope she ventures out.

I think in a couple of days we’ll call on the Dog behaviorist that St. Huberts provides.  She can help us coax Riley into the backyard.  I’ll probably learn a thing or too from her that could prove beneficial with all our crew!

So here we are.  I was well prepared as I left St. Hubert’s.  They supplied me with food, crate, phone numbers and lots of smiles and good wishes.  Everyone there LOVES Riley.  Seems she was dropped off by her owners who found her to be very wary and nervous living in that big city across the river.  Some of us do find that place rather noisy.  (Not me, I love it, but I can truly understand being a tiny little puppy and being overwhelmed by all the noise).  Apparently she was left alone quite often and was heavily drugged to help manage her anxiety.  Let me just say….I’m not judging!

Once she got off the meds and her personality started to blossom, she became the little shadow of a few chosen ones on the staff.  I only met her 8 days ago on my very first volunteer shift at St. Huberts, but I was smitten.  We bonded immediately.  So here she is.  In my crazy home with 2 wonderful golden retrievers, 2 fabulous, sometimes fickle cats and hubby and daughters.

She is still a little nervous so we are taking “baby steps”.  The storm was a little worrisome but we got thru it.  Right now she’s under my desk as I type at the computer.

It’s a good feeling rescuing somebody!!!

And so our story begins.
